Artist’s Retreat

In the market for a weekend retreat, our client fell in love with a small artist’s cottage just opposite a beautiful nature preserve. Our task was to enlarge the house while staying true to the original structure’s creative, rustic soul.
The main volume of the existing home became an open living space for cooking, dining, and relaxing while the smaller, back portion of the house morphed into a master bedroom suite. Two generous additions created new space for an entry hall, art studio, two guest rooms, and a lookout tower with views over the preserve. Reclaimed doors, stone, and wood feature heavily throughout the home and are juxtaposed with modern finishes for a look that recalls the feel of the original cottage.
